Tasmanian Devils are not the easiest animal to see in the wild as they are shy animals and easily startled, but it is certainly not impossible. The easiest way to see a Devil in the flesh is to view one in captivity. There are Tasmanian Devils in Zoo's and Wildlife Parks throughout Australia. Captive Devils will exhibit behaviour different to a wild Devil, however their basic instincts are still there and you can get up close and personal to the animal, something you wont be able to do in the wild.

If you are after the wild experience then of course Tasmania is the only place you will see them and with the Devil Facial Tumour Disease rapidly spreading through the devil population, sightings in some areas will be rare. One guaranteed way of experiencing wild Devils is to volunteer with the DPIW Disease program where they trap and examine devils for research into the disease, not only will you see Devils you will learn a tremendous amount about them. Unfortunately Boomajaril is not open to the public.

My picks for the best Devil experience in Tasmania are below. They are two completely different experiences Kings Runs sees the Devil in their wild natural environment, where you can view a devil feeding on a carcass and the other is at the new Devils@Cradle an interpretation and viewing centre where you can view them in captivity and get up close and personal.

It's an experience you will long remember and Geoff keeps the evening interesting with stories about the Tassie Devil and the history of the property.

There are not many opportunities to see Devils in the wild as they are very shy creatures. Other areas where you might sight a Tasmanian Devil if you drive slowly and carefully at dusk are:

Mt Field National Park

Due to the spread of the Devil Facial Tumour Disease a lot of these areas may not have a high Devil Population. More on DFTD

The best way to get close to Wild Devils, learn about them and maybe do your part in helping to find a cure for the Devil Facial Tumour Disease is to volunteer with the DPIW. It will be a holiday to remember.

Interpretation and Viewing Centre

Want to know everything about the Tasmanian Devil, see one up close and personal and even get the chance to stroke one?. If so, Devils @ Cradle is the place to go.

This property is located approx. 500 metres from the entrance to the World Heritage area of the spectacular Cradle Mountain National Park

Devils@Cradle is a relatively new facility set up to educate and provide long term conservation to the Devil. It is not your standard Wildlife Park concentrating only on the Tasmanian Devils with experience guides including Chris Coupland, who has been seen on numerous Television shows and Documentaries about the Devil.

The guides introduce you to the Devil with a short documentary, question and answer session and possibly pat a Devil. It will certainly squash any myths you have been lead to believe.

If you are more adventurous and have the stomach for it, you can come in the evening and see the Devils feeding.
