Collecting
information on Devil Populations and the spread of
the Devil Facial Tumour Disease is crucial to current
studies.
You can help by supplying information of dead or sick
devils if you should come across them.
Report
sightings of Diseased Devils
Sightings of diseased Tasmanian devils, particularly
in areas thought to be disease-free, can be reported
on the Devil Disease Hotline: Ph: 6233 2006. Messages
taken after business hours, and at weekends, will
be responded to the same day (for emergencies), or
the next business day (for general sightings).
Reports
of sightings should include details on the location,
contact details (including a phone number) and the
condition of the animal.
You
should never touch devils, under any circumstances.
They might be diseased, even if you can't see tumours.
Not enough is known about the disease and we don't
want to risk contaminating other areas or putting
your health at risk although there is no evidence
that it can be passed on to other species. Caution
is the best defense.
Injured
or dead Devils
If you come across a dead of sick Devil check them
over, but remember:
- Always
put your own safety first particularly if the Devils
are roadkill.
Do not handle Devils as like all wild animals their
behaviour can be unpredictable particularly if they
are injured and in pain.
If
a Devil is dead and it is a female and there is evidence
of movement in the pouch, there may be babies that
are still alive. You may remove the pups and use a
blanket or shirt to keep them as warm as possible.
When removing the pups we recommend that you wear
gloves. You will need to contact a caring facility
immediately to hand over the pups - DO NOT ATTEMPT
to raise the pups yourself.
