The
PVC Poly-Trap used by DPIW Scientific officers to trap and
examine Tasmanian Devils was invented by DPIW Wildlife Biologist
Nick Mooney. The trap is made of Poly Pipe material and
encases the
Devil securely and is protected from outside forces, including
other animals and the weather.
Nicks
motivation to develop the trap was to provide a safer and
less stressful environment for the Tasmanian Devil. The
smooth surface of the polypipe prevents injury to the Devil
and let's it feel secure. Most times when a devil is found
in a
trap it
is actually asleep, sometimes even snoring.
The
Devil trap was voted 'Peoples choice Award' on the ABC's
New Inventors program.
The
Trap is a simple yet effect design. A bait is placed at
the back of the trap, this activates a cord which releases
the trap door, trapping the Devil safely inside.
DPIW
Scientific officer Jason Wiersma, talks about the trap
in this
short video.
