The Documentary "Devils on the Verandah" is currently
in production. Produced and written by Debbie Thoy of Wizard
Corporation Productions, It looks at the relationship between
the Tasmanian Devil and Humans. It centres around the "Boomajaril
Property" in the North West of Tasmania where wild devils
interact with the residents on a daily basis. The Boomajaril
part of the documentary is an extremely touching and often
amusing look at these highly misunderstood creatures which
over the years have been branded as vicious, smelly vermon.
In fact they are quite timid, shy and rather gentle creatures
by nature.
The documentary also looks at three people who work with devils
or have dedicated their time to care for these creatures.
We tell their story and find out what is being done to save
the Tasmanian Devil from extinction due to the Devil Facial
Tumour Disease which has wiped out up to 90% of Devils in
some areas of the state.
We
follow Department of Primary Industries and Water (DPIW) scientific
officer Jason Wiersma as he goes about his duties of trapping
and examining Tasmanian Devils for DFTD.
Another
person we focus on is Geoff King. Geoff sacrificed his cattle
farming business which has be run by his family for over a
century, and converted his land on the North West Coast to
preserving wildlife. |
